After a two and a half hour drive I arrived at the beach at 8.30 to find Cam and Si nearly set up and Russ just getting ready. After all the recent catches everbody was expecting a good day.
It was a murky morning as we headed out and anchored up over the reef all very close together and where Cam had caught the other day. What a tackle graveyard…Five rigs later a short move was in order but apart from a few knocks and a Corkwing Wrasse nothing was happening.
Si decided to head off into the distance and Cam soon followed. It seemed a wise decision to follow these local maestros so I headed off the reef to where it dropped off. Bites were instant but just dogfish, then a small bream. It was looking up. I had one big bait out for ray – but wouldn’t you know it my next bite on the spinning rod turned out to be my first ever undulate of around 13lb. It took an age to get in on the light gear but was well worth it.
Then it went dead. Cam came back in having not yet had a fish…he was even muttering about his first ever blank at Swanage, and headed over to the reef again. I went deeper. Here I found my second undulate, a bit smaller around 8 -9 lb
I was hoping for a spotted ray but that wasn’t to be.
At around 2.30 I came back over the reef. I saw another guy catch a small bream so anchored 100m away. Nothing for half an hour but then the fishing just exploded. The baits weren’t even hitting the bottom before the bream were nailing them. I had twenty in the next couple of hours. None of the big fish that have been getting caught, my best were just over 2lb but they were great sport.
Most of the others had already headed in and I kept thinking I needed to go but it was so glorious on flat sea, the sun shining and none stop bites I had to stay out. In the end Russ reminded me out parking was up and we headed back. Russ had managed some bream as well so was happy with making the trip from Bristol.
For myself it turned into a great day, flat seas, sunshine, Undulate Ray targeted and caught and an ice box full of bream.
