So the day had finally arrived for some ECKA members to lock horns in mortal codbat and sort out who was, for the day, the cod catching supremos. The day was Saturday, the venue was north landing and with the somewhat turbulent weather forecast we were uncertain of a launch that many had written off and decided to stay at home for one reason or another. However, a band a hardened kayak fishy persons were hell bent on having a match and no amount of bad weather threats or falling numbers where going to stop them
The plan was to turn up at NL at 8.30 to check out the conditions and if they were too bad then we were going to hot foot it off to North Frod to chase pike and trout instead.
Nevertheless, rear admiral Hogg gave a launch the all clear so we started to ready our fishing frigates Gray was running late due to his car battery being flat but due to his amazing powers of over taking he managed to arrive for the planned 10 o clock launch.
Assembled at the start line at H hour we were seen off by our furry friend slippy the the seal who quickly made his way back to the water once he say Hoggy coming down the slope
Now we could not of picked a worse tide to fish a cod match as it was only a meager 4.8 meter tide and there was hardly any run In fact there was so little run that the wind was blowing us all over the place whilst at anchor which made it very costly for most of us in terms of lost tackle.
Normally strong run keeps the warp taught and allows you to keep your lead resting on a rock without it going down a snag but not today. Every time we dropped down and got the lead settled on the very rough ground of Bempton the wind would blow the kayak sideways and you'd go straight into a snag lol
With the lack of tide run the wrasse were out in force, I must have had at least 8 and a few pout too.
Finally a codling big enough to weigh in came to my hooks so I was happy, no photo I'm afraid as I was not getting it out in the wind and strange drifts where we were.
Meanwhile, Hoggy, Pete, Pedro, Phil and of course Gray were getting a few coddling and our cod meet was making true to its namesake. Semtex had lost his anchor and was struggling to keep over fish holding gulleys. Now most of us had paddled 30 minutes to Bempton to find cod but no run meant hard fishing, oh well, that’s fishing. Gray however had stayed near NL and was secretly yakking codling with his fresh peeler crab His partner, in the match not in life lol, Phil had been having a stressful time paddling up and down Bempton whilst Gray was just sitting it out in the wind. As the match went into the last hour Phil was ready for going in but Gray got a grip of him and told him to anchor next to him for a while and with this Phil started catching the bearded ones. In fact on his first drop Phil got the biggest fish of the match and won the prize that accompanied that honour. Nice one Phil, perseverance is the key mate
As we all landed after a good day on the water everyone was apprehensive to who had won, although we all knew really who had the question was by what margin lol.
Scales up here are the results of the pairs match. Oh I forgot to mention the tombola paired the following people together and put Hoggy solo as we had an odd number.
Pairs result bag weights
1st Gray & Spadulike 14lb 15oz
2nd Hoggy 4lb 14oz
3rd Glenn & Petemorph 3lb 8oz
4th Semtex & Pedro 2lb 12oz
1st Biggest fish Spadulike 2lb
2nd Biggest fish Gray 1lb 15oz
3rd Biggest fish Hoggy 1lb 14oz (caught more cod which claimed 3rd)
4th Bigggest fish Glenn 1lb 14oz
5th Biggest fish Petemorph 1lb 10oz
Pathetic sizes really for Bemmo but the tide was very small and the wind was a problem but at least we got out after many said we wouldn’t Another one to look forward to next year when the tombola decides our fates once again.
THE WINNERS OF ECKA BEMMO PAIRS COD MATCH 2013
Gray & Phil AKA Spadulike
A big well done to Gray and Phil for pulling our pants down and giving us all a royal ECKA spanking lol, Pete enjoyed it lol! Also a big well done to Phil for sticking with it this year after a few disappointments, your fishing has come on mate. To think that he nearly landed too before his pairs partner got a grip of him, just goes to show take it right to the wire and who knows?
They shared a prize pot of £35 and Phil won £7 and a Yo-zuri lure for the biggest fish
For me yet another great day afloat with a top bunch of lads who I am proud to know, fish, laugh and joke with. Hi ho silver, you got me loan ranger lol!
A big shame Stonefish, Yakkin Sam and Trev could not make it today, oh well there’s always next year lads. You missed a piss taking giggle.
Big thanks to Al of the Kayakfishing shack for providing the trophies and to Graham of the Fishing Basket Hull for providing the biggest fish prize (Yo-Zuri lure).
All the best and tight lines to you all
Please add your photos too lads who braved the conditions
