Flamborough Kayak Meet Report
This years match was held at South Landing Flamborough
The meet and match would make money for lifeboats as usual, And this
year had Heroes On The Water there too
Confidence
With as dodgy forecast and big tides the event would need a good
safety team
The event was given an arsenal of safety and rescue equipment at there
disposal and opted for 2 rescue jet bikes
The bikes were chosen for the event for many reasons most of all there
ability to respond fast in shallow water
The event team had full confidence in the safety crew Ashley Evans and
Neil Crawthorne of Hornsea Inshore Rescue
With the event team knowing the the safety crew could handle the event
well , Confidence would need to be given to the anglers ,this was done
by the safety crew being there all the time and making sure the
anglers knew they would be close with not much disturbance
The Boundary
Before the safety brief Stonefish and Ashly Evans took a trip around
the head to do a full safety view of the sea and set the boundary
Boundary was set from the no take zone to the head and an anglers
asked to stay away from the scars and breaking waves, A good deal of
common sense would show were safe water was
The Brief
A safety brief was given by Stonefish and covered areas of danger etc
In the brief the Heroes On The Water Grand Slam was announced and the
rules given
The extra event was a flatfish and round fish combined weight
The Match
Anglers headed out some staying close and some going for the he who
dares approach and going in to the big swells and tide
The tide would be ebbing for the most the match, This would reveal
Flamboroughs scars and kelp to the anglers
One of the 1st to catch was Mark Radcliffe with a Thornback Ray
A Few Flatfish had been getting caught meaning the HOW event was
working well
As the tide started to pull the safety bikes were a very reasuring
sight to the angler being all over the place keeping checking every
one was OK and managing in the conditions
Many people came just to be part of the event and did not put there
efforts in to the fishing and more the social side of the event
The fish started getting caught think and fast the the call over the
radio came
Doing The CONGER On A Jet Bike
In the middle of the afternoon a call came over the radio,,Whats the
size on a Conger Eel ?
The reply was could you please keep the eel alive wile we find out
A conger is not a very common catch at Flamborough so this was of
great interest
A call was made back to the eel master Stonecold Steve Whittaker and
asked if he could flag the jet bike and have the eel brought to the
waters edge so it could be weighed and released and the points tallied
Sam Baxter and Stonefish made there way to the water being met by a
speeding jet bike , Every effort was made to get the fish tallied
quick and next to no distress to the fish
Sam waded out to meet Ash on safety bike 1
An exited Stonefish awaited the eel
Sam had a smile on his face he said well its a nice common eel
Poor Stonecolds fish ID skills were poor but the fish was weighed at
the waters edge, photoed and let swim free to fool another angler with
poor fish species skill
It was no Conger but still very nice to see
The End Is Near
As the match neared the end fish were being caught by nearly every
angler that remained on the water
Some anglers weighed there fish early and some like Semtex Simon
Bradley chose to weigh and put back there fish
He had caught a ray , not far from the launch area
Weigh Em
The fish were weighed and photos taken and some stories told about
waves ,swell and fish
Some photos were taken at the weigh in and everyone was invited back
to campsite for the presentation and raffle
