Introducing the Buechat Focea Comfort 3 Wet Suit an outstanding alternative to a drysuit and one that is sure to be a winner among the kayak fishing fraternity.
The first I thing noticed about this garment was the high quality materials used in its construction. Focea have used the highest quality 5 mm Buechat neoprene that will not only keep you warm in the UK’s somewhat chilly waters but will also maintain its integrity throughout many seasons of arduous kayak fishing excursions. The zips which are located on the cuffs, ankles, neck and back are constructed of hard waring materials and have solid interlocking teeth that will only come apart upon correct operation of the mechanism. Unlike some inferior zips that can come apart in the middle when you least expect them to.
Also what was noticed about this wetsuit was its pre-stretched and embossed arms and elbows. This is a invaluable feature as it immediately gives the kayak angler an ergonomic advantage. What I mean is that your arms are not restricted from the off so more of the power of your paddle stroke translates into the water and the forward motion of your craft. If the arms were not pre-stretched some of your effort would be absorbed into the suit and wasted.
The embossed elbows and knees provide extra durability and protection for those vulnerable parts of the body that can sometimes find themselves being banged or ssweared on rocks or scars during landing maneuvers. It is also worth mentioning that the joints at these sites are not stitched which gives you extra piece of mind that your suit will literally not start falling apart at the seams.
Another excellent feature worthy of note is the Focea Comfort 3’s dam system back zip which forms a double protective seal that prevents the ingress of cold sea water into the closed warm environment of the suit. This prevents any unpleasant inter suit changes in temperature that could cause momentary distraction to the angler and or cold shock which can in some cases be dangerous. Coupled with this feature is the surprisingly warm fire lining system that makes the wetsuit one of the warmest, if not the warmest I have ever worn. I usually only ware a drysuit and thought I’d never go back until I tested this wetsuit.
Something that also puts some people off drysuits is the feeling of being strangled by the latex neck seals, you don’t get this with the Focea Comfort 3 as its neck is adjustable and can be opened to vent on those hot days afloat. Likewise you can also integrate a thermal hood on those chillier days afloat. To top it all off this wetsuit looks the part too and you will not feel out of sorts strolling up or down the beach in it with your kayak in tow, a sure hit for the fashionista’s amongst us. At a surprisingly low price of only £249 it is also an affordable alternative to a drysuit which can set you back nothing short of £500 if you want a good one.
After all of the outstanding features I have mentioned some of you might say, what’s the catch or faults? In response to this I would say that I have not found any thus far but if I do I’ll be sure to let you know.
Finally, to sum it up what you have here is a wetsuit that is in my opinion every bit as good as the kayak fishing drysuits on the market and at a fraction of the price. You also don’t have to constantly worry about tearing a hole in it like a drysuit as it’s a wetsuit, genius.
Hope you enjoyed reading my review of the Buechat Focea Comfort 3 wetsuit and that it helps you make an informed decision when it comes to you choosing your wet gear for this seasons kayak fishing adventures. However, don’t believe a word I’ve just said, try one for yourself and see what you think.
Happy kayaking and tight lines to you all.
