So it had been quite some time since I'd been out on a yak and due to the fact that I had just purchased a new Fatyak Kaafu and Typoon Multisport 4 drysuit it was about time.
The plan was for me, Hoggy, Stonefish, Supersonic and Stonecold to have a bash at deep dyke filey brigg for some of those tide cod we all know hide there. However, after much deliberation only myself and Hoggy went to Filey, the others opted for a session over a poo pipe in Hornsea.
We arrived in Filey at about 11am and by the time we got ready we were on the water by 12.15. The sun was out but as we cleared the beach it soon became apparent that all was not how it seemed lol. As we approached high brigg the wind soon became a constant source of annoyance that required a lot of yak adjustment as it turned us from the back. After compensating for this Hoggy pointed to a crab pot buoy that was about 150yrds off brigg end just on the north side, the plan was to tie off to it and drop down onto them cod lol
As we approached a quick change of mind was made as we could see the swell on the north side was considerable to the point of abandonment. So that's what we did. We changed cause with Hoggy saying "lets just go to the bell and tie off to it" . Now I have never gone more than 100yards off brigg end so you can imagine my thoughts lol.
With this we headed out. The change of plan included making a grapple with a lead weight and hook and then to throw it onto the metalwork of the bell and just tight off to it. Hoggy drew up next to me and I held onto his yak whilst he tied the grapple iron lol. It took him about 2 minutes but in this time we had been blown a further 300 yards past the bell by a 25mph sw and the middle of the flood tide
swear we thought as we started a valiant attempt to paddle back to the bell to deploy our grapple hook, shad lead lol. About 5 minutes went by when Hoggy said to me that we were not making any headway against the 25mph side wind and oncoming tide and by this time I could feel the burn in my shoulders lol
We made a minor adjustment and turned our fatyaks into the wind and headed straight into the wind against tide swell and paddled for all we were worth ;D. At this point we were paddling over 3-4 foot swells generated by wind against tide with the tops being blown off by a strong wind. It seemed determined to test us to the max along with our yaks but thankfully the fatyaks just ate those swells for dinner. The change of direction paid off as we started to make painfully slow headway. 30mins later we reached brigg end lol and tucked in for some rest bite feeling parched and tired. As I got close to high brigg my hat blew off and I could not be arsed to go back for it but Hoggy the star did the honours, cheers buddy
Just as we tucked in and got upto carr nase the wind stopped almost as it rose over the hill.
As we turned left to land near the sailing club a sense of relief came over me that not only had we tested the fatyaks and my drysuit in a demanding sea but we were still about to tell the tale lol. Welcome back to yaking boys, now that blew the cobwebs out of the system and got rid of the Christmas flab
After surfing in on the excellent swell riding yaks we both had a well earned coffee and thawed our hands out brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Hoggy regaining feeling in his hands
Me with no hat, dry mouth sludge and dried salt on my face ;D
I then started the long drag up the hill whilst hoggy pulled his yak to cobble landing I did not know you could park there lol Oh well more fitness, good job I've got mineral crew membership.
After all that excitement we managed no fish as we did not even wet a line But I went out to the bell and beyond, and at no point did I feel sea sick or feel like the yak was going to tip. It rode the swell effortlessly and got me back to dry land. Hoggy said if we were not fit we would have struggled this day, I thought we did! lol.
We had no fish but the other lads had a nice calm session at Hornsea with no wind or swell and they had a few fish too They even got to smell policeman's poo, blub blup glug glug Good job it was cold as there would have been more vapor poooooooooooooooooo
Me and Hoggy have swore that we will get onto that bell soon to get some of those tide cod and indeed Hoggy mentioned that we would of got some today if the wind didn't swear us lol, That's fishing!
All the best and tight lines to you all!
