With the Plaice Chase on Saturday myself and Martin headed to Southborne on Friday to familiarise ourselves with the venue. On arrival there were a couple of other guys getting ready to launch and the word was that plenty of plaice were caught last weekend so our hopes were high.
There had been much mention of the Southborne shore dumps on the forums but in the event it wasn’t much of an issue.
We spent most of the day drifting very slowly with the wind holding us against the tide covering around a mile and a half. The fish were pretty consistent, just no plaice. I had a Goby, Doggies, Whiting, and Pouting with Martin getting a couple of small Smoothies as well.
Saturday and we were at the venue bright and early and it wasn’t long before the regular faces started to appear.
I decided on a change of tactics today and anchored in a gulley just a few hundred meters out. In the first hour I hardly had a bite whilst I saw Keith land a flat fish in the distance and Martin bringing in one fish after another. A move was definitely in order so I anchored 50 meters away and started getting bites straight away. No Plaice for me but plenty of Bream, small Smoothies and Dabs.
By around 12.30 the wind was bitterly cold and the bait was running low so I decided on an early finish. On the beach it was coffee chips and banter as the few plaice caught were brought to the measure.
The eventual winner – Jason Stanbridge.
Many thanks to Lofty for organising and PBSBC for the delivery of hot food on the water via a gaff ! Another great social event raising cash for HOW and possibly, just possibly the start of Richic ‘s rise to stardom. Remember we knew him before he was famous.
