It’s official. There is nothing swimming in Torbay except pin whiting and one very lost Pollack.
After yesterday’s whiting fest I headed to the other side of the bay in hope of herring and huss.
The launch from Meadfoot was nearly aborted as the slipway is closed after the storm damage. I went to have a look at the second slip and that looked fine for launching at high but I couldn’t remember what the ground was like for coming back at low. After I had spent half an hour lugging everything to the beach a kindly local guy informed me – ‘ I hope you aren’t intending to get back in here at low water ‘ Oh well it was too late now I would deal with that later.
I headed straight round to Hopes nose and jigged sabikis for an age. Nothing and nothing showing on the finder either. I drifted back over the sand to Thatchers Rock with bait down and found the plagues of pin whiting. I dropped the sabikis and found the plagues of pin whiting. Anywhere over sand and you found the plagues of pin whiting..
Half an hour playing around Thatchers rock produce one Pollack. At least I had something for the hunt.
My final mark was a dead cert. I had caught god huss here regularly so it was with no little confidence that I dropped anchor. Baits out and……nothing. Not even a dogfish. I even scaled right down to mini species tactics on one rod but could not winkle out a bite. It is beginning to look like it is pin whiting or nothing here at the minute.
Coming back in was interesting. No chance of getting back to where I launched. It was a boulder field of monumental proportions. I ended up dragging it over 50m of boulders half way along the beach and carrying everything up the steps. Luckily there was a kindly soul chopping firewood who offered to help with the lift up the steps.
Two days fishing, great weather and scenery. Vast amounts of tiny whiting and not a lot else, but it still beats the hell out of working. I was not going to bother going tomorrow instead just heading home but someone suggested the Teign Estuary. I’ve never fished it from the yak, I don’t expect to catch a lot, if anything but already I’m looking forward to it.
