Today saw the start of the ECKA fish league and the venue of the first skirmish was Filey Brigg on a whopping 6.4 meter tide, are we mad? probably.
I have decided not to fish the league this year as I want to relax but have appointed myself this years league commentator and banter provocateur. Today seemed like a good day to start.
We arrived at Filey at 07.30 to a suitably empty cobble landing at started to get ready. It was going to be a bit of wait as the tide was ebbing until 10.20 and for those of you who know the brigg you’ll know that you can't cross brigg end safely during the ebb. Especially on a big tide.
After the usual banter, the £1 challenge coins being put into my ash tray for safe keeping and hoggy the butcher cutting up a huge box of squid that Boardy had bought for us all we all assembled on the beach. The four league competitors were raring to go whilst I took the photos.
Poised and ready to fish.
Going round brigg end was easy as the sea was flat and there was no wind, hoggy mentioned that we would be fine even in the big tide. We all got round safely to the north side and set anchors at slack and waited for the flood to start. Hoggy and Boardy opted to fish a bit further out in 60 foot of water whilst me, Phil and Karl fished a tad closer in in the rough ground. As the tide started running the bites came on and a few fish started to be pulled in. However as this big tide started to get a hold it became clear that we were not going to have it all our own way. In fact as it got a couple of hours in it was hard to hold bottom even with 12 oz leads! lol. Hoggy and showed Boardy a nice gulley and as he did Boardys anchor tripped in the fierce run causing him to get his rigs snagged and lose them. However, this proved to be the game changer because as it tripped and he drifted back 50yrds guess where he settled? Yes in Hoggys gulley lol. With this Andy started to yak league cod. Boardy has a habit of being put into gulleys by hoggy and catching the cod lol.
Boardy in Hoggys gulley, oo er!
Hogsta fishing hard
Meanwhile Phil was trying different marks trying to land a league fish and as if by magic he lands a fish and it turns out to be one of his favorites, yes you’ve guessed it a wrasse, he loves them In fact you could hear him shouting at the top of his voice “I hate you I hate you” lol classic .
I was getting some luck in 35 foot of water and managed to get a codling and hook another 4 but as I was bringing them up through that strong strong run they were bumping off . This was due to the fact that I was using my stiff interline rod and in that run with braid it was ripping the hooks out of their mouths, oh well that’s fishing and me choosing the wrong rod for the conditions. People who know the brigg will know how strong the run can be there normally let alone on big tide.

As the day went on Phil announced he was going as he had caught his target species and lost his anchor reel so he could not fish on. With this we all wished him well and we continued to fish hard. The time soon came for us all to up anchors and leave as it was now HW and briggy was about to turn nasty as the whole of Filey bay empties out over it. We left at slack and landed ready to see who had won the £1 challenge and to see how many league points the lads had got.
Andy scored 4 points and won the £1 challenge whilst Hoggy scored 2 points. Karl got the check book and pen and Phil scored no points but avoided the wooden spoon with his wrasse.
Fishing was tough today but very enjoyable as it was one of those sessions were you had to chop and change tactics and move about in search of the fish. Even though I only got one today I enjoyed fishing with the lads and pitting my whits against the tough conditions of the brigg and that big tide. After all easy conditions don't make good kayak anglers.
Boardy takes the money, money talks, money talks dirty cash I want you dirty cash I need you.
Scores on the doors are as follows.
LEAGUE POSITIONS AFTER THE 1ST DAY: 1st place Boardy with 4 points , 2nd place Hoggy with 2 points.
ECKA £1 CHALLENGE CUP: 1st place Glenn 2 wins (Hornsea 1/2/14, Corneilian 19/2/14) 2nd Boardy 1 win (Filey 1/3/14)
So there you have it the first league match sees Boardy a deserved leader, well done mate you ended 2013 well and you have started strong in 2014. Let’s hope you can keep it up with the likes of Hoggy and Pete plotting to topple you.
However, remember this, the league is a marathon not a sprint, good luck lads.
All the best and tight league lines folks
