So I arranged to take out Paul and Karl via the facebook page. As we got closer to the day I got the impression they weren't too experienced so changed the venue at the last minute figuring that the edge of the shipping lanes probably wasn't the best place for them to be.
When we met in the car park my suspicions were confirmed, neither had fished at sea or tried anchoring, although there set ups all looked spot on and they had obviously done their research. The plan was to head out from Humberstone Creek and fish just over the drop off. The weather was perfect now all we needed was the fish.
On getting to the mark I paddled around watching them anchor, just in case there was a problem but everything went to plan and soon we were all fishing. It wasn't long before I was pulling in the usual suspects.
Paul looked perfectly at home on his yak and was also pulling in good sized whiting.
Karl on the other hand was struggling for bites. After an hour he came up with the classic question - what do you do when you need a pee. The only answer was to paddle back the mile we had come out to the beach. Off he went. An hour or so later we had presumed he had gone home but he appeared back in our midst. The problem was he couldn't get out of the dry suit on his own so had to find a friendly passer by to help him undress which not surprisingly took a while. No wonder Grimsby gets a bad name.
Once back he had a new lease of life and was catching fish steadily.
A leisurely paddle back past one of my favourite summer marks
and onto the beach with no drama.
Both the guys caught fish and will have increased their confidence. I have another load of whiting to prepare.
Tomorrow there will be cod.....almost guaranteed
