They know how to prioritise.
It all started last week when I put a short post on the ECKA forum - ' anyone fancy a cheeky mid-weeker next week '. I hoped maybe one person was free to meet up on the Yorkshire Coast.
Well plans were planned and plots were plotted. However teachers weren't teaching, kitchen fitters weren't kitchen fitting, slaughter men weren't slaughtering and electricians weren't doing whatever they do. You get the idea - people were basically skiving to go fishing. Seven of us eventually launched after a few dropped out.
Hoggy made a final call on the venue - Filey Brigg. Now this is not my favourite place. I have been there twice and both times it has scared me coming back around the Brigg, but these guys know the venue so I was in safe hands.
It was an early start, I set off at 4.30 in the morning and there is just a chance we may have been on the water too early being as we couldn't see anything.
We were around the Brigg at first light and the sea was once again flat calm.
Anchors down and a 5/0 loaded with worm and squid. First drop a small codling, second drop one around two and a half pound. Things were looking good. But as always is slowed down. I had five codling in the end and one coalfish.I also had around 15 ballan wrasse. These fish weren't shy inhaling 5/0's with two squid on them. I usually fish for them with a size 1 hook and ragworm.
Anyway at 12 the call came from Glenn that we had to leave. You have to be back over the Brigg before the Ebb starts because after that the whole place becomes somewhere you don't want to be.
Back in the bay the rest of the guys stayed to catch dabs while I headed in for the long drive back.
Three days in the new yak and plenty of fish for the freezer. So far so good - one thing is for sure usually after three days in a row my back is royally screwed. I look and feel like an old man trying to straighten myself up on the beach. Now after three days solid fishing I know I could do another three quite happily. There is definitely something to be said for that seat.
Many thanks to the ECKA boys for the company and making me feel safe at the Brigg for once.
Next stop Poole in ten days.
